Maillardville Community Centre
Place Maillardville Community Centre is a replacement facility for an existing community centre that has served the Maillardville District in Coquitlam for over 35 years. The facility houses several multipurpose rooms ranging from small meeting rooms to larger aerobic centred spaces with sprung floors (some of which are dividable with an operable partition), both a catering and a demonstration kitchen, a flexible intergenerational lounge for youths and seniors to gather, a gymnasium, child programming spaces, admin and support spaces, and an underground parkade. The project was required to be constructed adjacent to the existing community centre while maintaining existing operations and key community programs The extreme proximity (1.2m) of the existing facility meant that careful consideration had to be given to the continued operation of the existing facility. The design team worked in close collaboration with the existing buildings operators, the City of Coquitlam, and the general contractor, to ensure that constructability and phasing of the new build was considered, and the operations (including summer camps for youth) were maintained all on the same site.
The building achieved occupancy in September 2022, and the adjacent outdoor plaza is scheduled for completion in Spring 2023.
This neighborhood focused centre is a fossil fuel free, all electric operation with heavy timber shear walls and roof. The design is a first step towards a total low carbon energy and low carbon materials solution.
