River District Energy
River District Energy’s Permanent Energy Centre (PEC) will be the backbone of the existing River District Energy hot water system, backstopped by natural gas boilers, but drawing up to 90% of it’s heat from plate exchangers, connecting back to Metro Van / Covanta’s Waste to Energy Facility in Burnaby.
This project will be a sustainable infrastructure showcase for the City of Vancouver and Wesgroup, and will do so within a vibrant planned community. The PEC building will feature a modern industrial massing, nodding to the industrial past of River District. The building will be visually transparent, inviting the public to engage with the process equipment, and the mass timber structure within. The exterior will feature an extensive green roof but the benefit of the residential neighbours, and an artwork facade system.
Beyond design, River District Energy is keen to invite the community to partake in facility tours, and to make information regarding sustainability, energy consumption, and health criteria such as emissions available. Design phase engagement would be an excellent opportunity to learn what information the community will want, and how, when the pec begins operations.
